Numbers
In 2005, a total of 11,754 students attended 38 non government schools in the primary sector. This has increased by 104 students (0.9%) on 2004 census figures.
A total of 12,800 students attended 17 non government schools in the secondary sector (Yrs 7-12). This is an increase of 284 students (2.3%) on 2004 census figures.
Gender
Even though there are a number of single gender schools (6), the overall enrolment in non government schools shows a fairly equal gender balance with male students numbers of 12,440 and female student enrolments at 12,114. There are 136 more female students than male students in the senior secondary sector (Years 11-12).
Students with Disabilities
There were a total of 297 students with a disability in the non government sector. This is an overall decrease of 16 students (-5.1%) on the 2004 enrolment.
Of these, 147 students were in primary schools and 150 were in the secondary sector (Years 7-12).
There were 108 (36.4%) in the independent sector and 189 (63.6%) attending Catholic systemic schools.
Indigenous Students
There are a total of 207 Indigenous students undertaking education in the non government sector, an increase of 10 (5%) on 2004 figures.
Of the Indigenous students, 112 students were at primary schools and 95 were at secondary schools.
163 Indigenous students (79%) of the total attending non government schools attended Catholic systemic schools, with 100 of these attending primary schools.
In 2005 the total number of international students enrolled at ACT non government schools was 56.
A total of 12 were enrolled at primary schools and 44 at secondary schools (Years 7-12). 58% of these primary school students and 90% of the secondary students attend independent schools. The number of international students studying in Years 11-12 has decreased from 27 in 2004 to 24 in 2005.
Of the 24,554 students attending non government schools in the ACT in the 2005 census, more than 31.5% reside in the Tuggeranong region, 18.6% reside in the Belconnen area and 11.8% of students reside in NSW.
